Carl Spörri - Kavinsky (Vincent Belorgey), der tote Testarossa Fahrer, war auf der Interviewcouch mit students.ch und erzählte von seinem neuen Album, Steak und Daft Punk. Students.ch: Vincent, nice to see you again – You've released your new single, Nightcall and you're currently wor...
Students.ch: Vincent, nice to see you again – You've released your new single, Nightcall and you're currently working on your new, and first, album, no?
Kavinsky: Yes, it's been a long time now since I started on the album...
Students.ch: I saw there's a remix competition going on for Nightcall – tell me some more about that.
Kavinsky: Yeah, it's a cool thing, we have around 150 remixes so far. I've heard about half of them myself.
Students.ch: And what do you think of those that you've heard?
Kavinsky: It's good, it's fresh! There's a large variety in music styles as well – there's a reggae and dubstep remix, even a metal one!
Students.ch: Why this competition?
Kavinsky: It was an idea from my producer and me...we think it's a good and innovative way to promote a new track, and on the other hand, it's also cool that my fans can have a go and show what they've got in remixing skills. If you're not famous or something, this is the chance for you to bring out your remix on a record and make one step in the direction of a music career. I think that's cool. It's also a good way for myself to make new connections and get to know new and interesting people in the music scene.
Students.ch: How many tracks are you planning to release on your first album?
Kavinsky: Don't have the exact number, but for sure around 14 or 15 tracks.
Students.ch: Are you planning on making any more videos around the whole Kavinsky theme, as in Testarossa Autodrive?
Kavinsky: Yes, yes, yes! I'm currently working on this next to my album. But I am taking my time, because I want to get it right and the album has first priority. It's a bit to short to release something out with the EP Nightcall, but I'm definitely working on something for the album. I not sure if I am going to do something in animation, like the last one, or like a short movie.
Students.ch: Tell me, how did Vincent get reborn as Kavinsky and start to shake up the electronic music scene?
Kavinsky: Well, I've got a couple of friends who where already in the business...I was at school with Jackson and have known Mr. Oizo for about 15 years now. Everybody was making music. I wanted to try it and was inspired by these old movies and TV shows I used to watch when I was young. In 2000 I also started watching these B-type zombie movies, which made me approach making music in this kind of dorky, stupid way. I'm not much of a musician, so this definitely helped. I make the music more through my energy than through my skills.
Students.ch: You've also been active as an actor, for example in Mr. Oizo's first film „Steak“. Was that your first time in front of the camera and how was it?
Kavinsky: No, no...we used to do little flicks since we've been 19. It's always been funny to do. It's a corny movie, and some people can't understand how you can make such a stupid movie with so much money, but I don't think they get it. I'm proud of the movie and think it's pretty good.
Students.ch: Any more movies planned?
Kavinsky: No, not at the moment. I think I'm kind of finished with that. You have to be very patient as an actor, and I am not. (smiles) It's wait wait wait...
Students.ch: So no big Hollywood acting career then?
Kavinsky: (laughs) Hah...no, no...(smiles) well you know, I have to call them up at Hollywood first, but I think no...
Students.ch: You we're on tour in 1997 with Daft Punk. How was it touring with them?
Kavinsky: It was great. One cannot imagine how cool they really are. They're very nice, down-to-earth people. I'm a big fan, so it was crazy, everything at one time, seeing them the whole tour, actually being on tour with them. Wonderful. I was actually very light in discovering them – you won't believe this but I only listened to them first in 2001. I'm always late at discovering new music. I met them with Pedro. (Smiles) If you're hanging out with Pedro, you can meet everybody on earth...
Students.ch: What music / artists do you currently like to listen to in the electronic music scene?
Kavinsky: Hmm....I suppose Mr. Flash, for electronic music. I really like his new EP. At home I actually don't listen to much electronic music – a lot of Mozart though.
Students.ch: Merci beaucoup and have a good night behind the decks!
Kavinsky: Merci à toi!
