The Humans of Switzerland Project

My name is Alex Beck and welcome to the Humans of Switzerland Project.

If you like what you see and read I encourage you to share my work with your friends and family.

Perhaps you might even like to take part in my photographic social documentary project and want to appear on the pages of: http://www.humansofswitzerland.ch. If so, please contact me directly via the below listed email address to make arrangements.

The Project

The initial inspiration behind this photographic social documentary project came about three-quarters of a year after I suffered a near fatal tram accident. Having spent a long time undergoing all kinds of operations and rehabilitation from the sustained injuries, I became aware an inspiring and fun project focused on the human condition would aid my further long-term recovery by helping me get out and about again.

After discovering an article in the ever enlightening Atlantic Cities journal entitled “A ‘Photographic Census Captures New York’s Characters”, introducing the New York street photography chronicle by former bond trader Brandon Stanton, I decided to start a loosely similar project based in and around Switzerland – the country that has become my home for well over twelve years now.

Behind The Camera

I am an award winning professional British photographer (LRPS), born in Hamburg Germany and based out of Switzerland. I was introduced to photography by my grandfather aged seven, when I was given my first camera; a divine Kodak Instamatic Pocket 100. Curious by nature, I have taken pictures ever since. In the past my work has been featured by LensCulture.com and other equally authoritative resources for contemporary photography.

Having studied photography, photo-media, printing and the history of photography at Wiltshire Art School, I also hold a degree with honours from the Humanities Department at King’s College London, University of London. I use a variety of cameras ranging from inconspicuous ultra-compact cameras such as the ancient yet trusty Leica D-Lux 3 to the professional full-frame sensor Canon EOS 5D Mark II & III. Occasionally I will also dust off my trusty Pentax ME Super 35 mm single-lens reflex camera load it with sublime Kodak Tri-X 400 film and take to the streets.

I love the diversity traditional non-digital photography offers the artist. Over the past six years I have also partially moved to the world of digital photography. Being a purist I never crop images, adhere to traditional post-processing techniques found in conventional darkroom environments and use available natural light whenever possible. Furthermore, I enjoy reading about the history of art and philosophy.

Today I am proud to be able to offer a specialised range of professional photographic services to my international clients. My contemporary portfolios include a variety of commercial commissions featuring: reportage wedding photography, headshot portraits, fine art boudoir, landscapes, architecture and corporate event photography.
