HI, my name is Ryan Kurniawan. I am a Catholic and come from Indonesia and will pursue a master in Quantitative Finance at UZH and ETHZ (joint programme) from September 2012 to January 2014.
I am very eager to live in a foreign country as i have never gone outside from my home country except for Singapore, which I visited briefly when on vacation 12 years ago. I really want to meet new people, new as in people from foreign land, socialize with them and learn their cultures beside studying. Even though I'm currently working for Dutch people and got to speak with them everyday at my office in Jakarta, it's still not enough as the environment is still the Indonesian environment.
I cannot speak German yet, let alone Swiss-German, but I'm currently learning the basics (in the capacity of introducing myself) and I'm sure that living in the Zurich will quicken the process exponentially.
I regard all of these as an opportunity to greatly expand my horizon, as I've been living in a shell (my country, I mean) for 22 years and I in desperate need for a change. But, it is important to note that my main purpose is to study.
It has been an ambition for me to pursue a study in applied probability in finance and I believe that the MSc in Quantitative Finance programme in UZH-ETHZ is the best for me. The curriculum is very much in line with what I want to study and it provides me a great opportunity to learn from the best in the field, such as Prof. Dr. Paul Embrechts and Dr. Jean Bertoin, which I have knowh through the several fantastic textbooks they have written.
But enough about me. What about you? I'm looking forward to meet and get to know you in Zurich. 'till then.
