Fünf seiner Solo-Alben (Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous und HIStory) zählen zu den meisterkauftesten Werken aller Zeiten. Weltweit hat Jackson 750 Millionen Alben verkauft, 13 Nummer 1 Singles veröffentlicht - und er ist einer von wenigen Künstlern, die zweimal in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen worden sind. Im guinness Book of World Records wird er als erfolgreichster Entertainer aller Zeiten aufgelistet und "Thriller" als das am meisten verkaufteste Album aller Zeiten. Michael Jackson hat 13 Grammy Awards gewonnen und den American Music Award’s Artist of the Century Award.

Im Alter von elf Jahren startete er seine Karriere zusammen mit seinen Brüdern bei den Jackson 5. In den frühen 1980ern prägte er die Kunstform des Musikvideos entscheidend ("Thriller").
