Weihnachtsmusik mit einer Prise Indie
Eray Müller - Weihnachtslieder müssen nicht langweilig sein. Dies beweisen Tom Smith (Editors) und Andy Burrows (I Am Arrows, We Are Scientists) mit ihrem Projekt Smith & Burrows. students.ch sprach mit Andy Burrows darüber, wie das Album entstanden ist und was er über Mariah Carey und Justin Bieber denkt.
Thanks, I’m not too bad. I’m at home in London and enjoying a few days off.
How is it going with the new project?
It’s going very well. We’re halfway through the tour and it’s really nice. It’s pretty different than touring with our other bands. We mainly play theatres and we have a cello player as well as a horn player. So the setup and also the sound is quite different.
Are you only playing Smith & Burrows tracks on tour?
No, we’re playing some Editors and Razorlight songs as well. And some of my songs, too. Then we’re playing all Smith & Burrows songs as well as some covers.
When did you come up with the idea of recording a winter album?
It was in May. Tom and me wanted to record a version of „Wonderful Life“ by Black. It came out very well so we also recorded other songs like „Only You“ be Yazoo. It became very wintery so we decided to record also some Christmas songs.
Isn’t the theme of Christmas something old-fashioned?
Well, Christmas is a big tradition in England. We always liked the social aspect, getting together with the family, enjoying the festive period. It’s a melancholic time with a naive optimism.
For me, the album is like a Christmas album with an indie twist.
Yes, definitely. We wanted it to sound absolutely serious, melancholic and dark.
Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Justin Bieber have also recorded Christmas albums.
They’re pretty horrible, honestly. We wanted to have an alternative to the typical Christmas albums.
Where and how will you spend Christmas?
After we finish the tour, we will stay at home with our family and friends, play with the kids and drink a bit, I guess.
Will Smith & Burrows continue after this record?
Definitely. But first we will record with our bands again. I think there will be a new Editors album in the autumn of 2012 and next year we want to release another album with non-festive rock songs.
What do your band colleagues think?
We haven’t really spoken to them about the project but I think they understand that it’s important to do things outside the band. They’ve very supportive.
Will you come to Switzerland?
Not this year but we’ll do more gigs next year.
So maybe we talk again next year.
Or earlier when we release a new record with We Are Scientists or my album.
