"No Fear, No Bravery" - eine Ode an Batman

Die zierlich, charmante Liedsängerin Céline aka Lyn M, hat dabei stellvertretend für Ihre Kollegen, dem Komponist, Produzenten, Schlagzeuger und Gründer der Band, Alain Frey und dem Sänger/Rapper MC Granite, mit Students.ch über das neue Album gepläuschelt. Ihr westschweizer Charm, welcher einem fortwährend in den Songs verführt, war dabei selbst über das rauschen und knacken des Skype Kanals in ihrem französisch angehauchtem Englisch zu spüren. So fragten wir dann auch in unserem schweizerdeutschen und fast so charmanten Englisch:

You are currently touring with your Album „No Fear, No Bravery“. What is the core message of this album?

Celine: Well this is a very wide question. But I think that it’s an Album that we made with all our experience. We’ve been playing for over 10 years and we had to go through many hard experiences and many fears and many doubts and that is why we decided to call this album like that, because we do believe that you have to be very – that you have to know fear and that you sometimes have to be really scared to find the strength to overcome all the problems, doubts etc…

Yeah, a little bit like in Batman right? Where he has to overcome his fear to climb up that wall and save Gothham…

(Laughing) Yeah. Exactly! The song is talking about that too: The heroes are scared, the worriers are scared, the cowboys are scared. And I am sure all myths, and… all the people that we believe in and that we believe are strong, it’s not true and that they are fragile inside and yeah…. I mean I am not very clear (laughing)

No, I think I understand. You are trying to say that it is part of human beings to be afraid and… that it depends how we use it.

Exactly. And how do you think this album is different from your previous album “Pretty Freaks”?Um, maybe it’s more organic and there is more air. I mean like – there is less electronic sound and there are more acoustic instruments. We try to make something more… more personal and more like us. We worked with Husky Höskulds. He’s a man who works with stars like Norah Jones and he did a great job to make it more organic – not organic in English. I don’t know how to say it in English. But it is like more of live, more human…

I see. And how did you guys find together as a band?

Oh well. We’ve been – I meet Alain 10 years ago, when I was a student and he was a drum teacher and we met once in a – how do you say that? Exams? Or like a concerts at the end of the music school. And we just tried to make something for one or two songs and… after that we just couldn’t stop and we made songs, and songs and songs. But I arrived after David and tree years after the band existed.

Yes, and then you became famous, also thanks to the “DRS Best Band” award. Has anything changed for you guys from before to now?

Well I mean it’s both. We always do music for ourselves and we try to make the music we love. And it’s very important for us to be proud of what we do and… so that hasn’t changed for 10 years. But was has changed… I don’t know, maybe we are more self-confident and we have more experience and… yeah I think it’s mostly experience and the fact that we are together for so long and we are more stronger. Yeah that we are stronger maybe…

Now, this is a broad question as well. But what is music for you guys as a band? What does it mean to you?

Music! Wow! (laughing) Oh I mean it’s a passion, it’s a job, it’s a way of life, it’s a way of thinking. I don’t think that you can make music and have a normal life. You have to choose to make sacrifices. Yeah, it’s a way of life. It’s from early in the morning to late in the night and… it never disappears. I mean you live with it all the time and sometimes it’s so good! And sometimes it’s just uh, it’s awful.

So would you say it is a language – a form to express yourself?

Yeah, but it’s more then that. It’s who we are. It’s how we express ourselves, but it’s also – how we are… yeah, it’s hard to express. It’s too spiritual. You know? (laughing)

Yes, I think understand what you are trying to say! What would interest me as well is what you think about the Swiss Music scene. Do you think there is something missing in our scene?

Yeah, maybe – well I think it’s coming. But what I think is missing in Switzerland is to be together. To be proud of the music we do… not about the place we are – I mean we are separated into tree languages and it is hard for us to feel as a real country and as a real arts community. So I think that we are – well it’s coming really now. We feel it and… now we can mix – comment dit ça? You know the German part and the French part are coming together, but we can do even more than that. I think. So we have to be together.

That sounds very interesting! So if I understood right, you are trying to say that Switzerland is a bit too divided right now? And if we unite ourselves we can be strong as a music scene?

Yes, exactly. And we can go outside of Switzerland and have a real personality, a real culture, real art from Switzerland and now we have to prove it in Europe and we have to be proud and have to stay together. We don’t care about the language and we don’t care about the “canton”, and if we come from Zurich or from Geneva. It doesn’t matter. We are just Swiss and we are proud of our music.

Oh! I am really glad you guys are representing Switzerland for us in the art scene. I love the intention you have and the mission you are following.

(Laughing) Oh, well thank you! Well I am not sure we represent Switzerland, but we are part of it… So...

Yes, every element is part of the whole. And we do enjoy your music a lot here at students.ch and me personally as well. Thank you very much for talking with us Céline.
