How Some Anti-drone Technologies Can Endanger OthersIn some cases, airport organizers did not coordinate these evaluations and demonstrations with the Federal Aviation Administration in advance. It is important for federally obligated airports to understand that the FAA has not authorized any airport to conduct any drone detection or countermeasure assessments unless those airports participate in the FAA’s drone detection program through CRDA, and that airports that allow such assessments may be in violation of their grant assurances. ” The letter also states that “unauthorized drone detection and countermeasure deployments may cause a number of problems, such as electromagnetic and radio frequency (RF) interference that affect flight safety and air traffic management issues.”
In addition, the American Radio Relay Alliance sent a warning letter to the FCC warning of video transmitters available on the market that operate between 1010 and 1280 MHz and transmit at up to six times the legal limit. “Of greatest concern is the ability of these devices to disrupt the operation of the [air traffic control] auxiliary targeting/transponder system[. ]" The problem is that one of the listed frequencies can be legally used for amateur radio operations, but the rest cannot. This means that someone could buy this equipment and operate it on a frequency that is not allowed. What equipment operates in this range?
